Extra Credit Reading Notes: Overview of Mythology
From watching the crash course videos on the overview of mythology I learned a lot about the breakdown and how to read mythology. First off, there are several different ways to look at myths and nobody is technically right or wrong. Myths are stories of culture and can show the social, psychological, literary, structural, performative, and the political state of that culture. This provides a more broad way to look at myths which can allow you to interoperate in a more general sense and take the underlying meaning of the story and turn it to your own or understand how it relates to other myths. There are also elements of myths that are somewhat constant throughout other myths of the same kind. An example of this is the hero's journey. The elements of this hero's journey are prevalent in every hero tale. While maybe not every point of this journey is met in every hero's story, the general elements and ideas are met throughout the story and once you realize this you gain a deeper understating of these stories and can interoperate the myths in a more effective way.
