Introduction to Me

My name is James Tanaka and I am originally from Colleyville, Texas. I am a currently a senior at The University of Oklahoma majoring in mechanical engineering and plan to work for Siemens Logistics once I graduate this May. I currently work as a bartender at Redrock Canyon Grill in Norman and have worked there for two years.

My biggest hobby is watching sports. I watch sports of all kinds, but football is by far my favorite. As a Dallas native, I am a fan of all the Dallas sports teams, the Dallas Cowboys being my favorite. When I was younger I also played most sports. Soccer was the sport that I was the best at. I ran track as well and the events that I ran were the 300 meter hurdles as well as the 400 meter relay. Another hobby of mine is playing video games on my Xbox One. The game that I play the most is Call of Duty as well as Overwatch.

My favorite foods are probably pizza or hamburgers; however, I enjoy most kinds of food! There are very few foods that I don't like but I cannot stand sour cream. The best kind of candy is anything chocolate and my favorite ice cream is cappuccino chunky chocolate from Braum's. The best cake is the triple chocolate cake that my mom makes. The restaurant that I frequent the most is Chipotle and I love their guacamole.

I enjoy rap music and my favorite artists include J. Cole, Young Thug, Future, and Juice WRLD. Currently, my favorite album is either Please Excuse Me For Being Antisocial by Roddy Ricch or A Love Letter to You 4 by Trippie Redd. I don't enjoy listening to country music but like to listen to jazz and edm music frequently.

  1. Hi James!

It's nice to meet you! I'm also a senior in mechanical engineering here at OU! It's nice to see some other DFW natives here in Oklahoma too! After graduation this May, I plan to start working for Michelin North America. Like you, I love food. I enjoy trying all kinds of different cuisines that can be found locally, or even around downtown Oklahoma City. I often find myself daydreaming in morning classes about lunch. It's that bad.

Anyways, I hope you have a great final semester and wish you the best!

  2. Oh wow, a real bartender in the class: that is so cool, James! People will sometimes use "bartender" style for storytelling, where people come into a bar (mythological bars!) and tell the bartender their story... or else the idea is that the bartenders themselves have some tales of wisdom to offer along with a drink. Maybe you can accumulate some wisdom tales in this class that will come in handy for tending bar! Although given a choice between a bar drink and cappuccino chunky chocolate from Braum's... I think I might opt for the Braum's ha ha. For a Myth-Folklore project a couple years ago (I enroll myself as a student in one of the classes every semester, just for fun), I did a story that had Braum's in it. I figured Braum's was worthy of story-immortalization; here's the story if you are curious: Mistress Rabbit's Wedding Day.
    Long live Braum's! :-)

  3. Hi James!

I’m also a senior and enjoy everything chocolate! I think that the best part about Oklahoma is that we have Braum’s. I lived in California for a few years and it was nice, but did it have Braum’s? Nope. I like your taste in music too! I hope that your semester goes well and I’m excited to read some of your work!

    1. Sorry, if you see a deleted comment from me it's because this posted twice for some reason. That's all it was! Carry on!

  5. Hi James!

I noticed you're a big fan of the NFL team the Dallas Cowboys, and I am a big NFL fan too. Personally I'm more of a Patriots guy myself and know that we have the GOAT on our team. I also like you're choice of rappers, but am wondering what all jazz artists you would recommend?

  6. Hi James!

I am a HUGE sports fan as well! You mentioned the Dallas teams, but are you a big OU Football fan as well? My friends always tell me I know too much about OU Football, not to brag but I'm basically an encyclopedia on the topic. However, I am not a big Dallas Cowboys fan, honestly I am more of a Cowboys hater. I think I am rooting for the KC Chiefs in the Super Bowl on Sunday, I would like to see Andy Reid win one finally! Good luck finishing up your final semester!

  7. Hi James! I don't know much about sports but its always fun to see people get into games! Are you excited for the superbowl? Any team you are going for or against? Congrats on the mechanical Engineering by the way! My brother graduated from electrical engineering at OU so I met a couple of his friends that were also electrical and mechanical and they worked so hard! I live right across the highway from Red Rock and have been there several times so maybe Ive seen you around! Have a great semester and best of luck in all your future plans!

  8. Hey James! I have a lot of family from Texas but Boomer Sooner all the way! In middle school I threw shot-put and discus and even went to state for it! I couldn't imagine having a degree like that! (I'll stick with my biology!) I hope I get to read more of your post and good luck with the class!

  9. Hi James!

Long time no see! Hope you're doing well and glad to hear about your post-college plans. I also love Young Thug and Future. I get a lot of crap for putting them in my top 5 rappers list, but I think they're definitely at that point. Also, I think Juice WRLD would have been up there soon if not for his unfortunate death, RIP.

  10. Hi James,

I too ran track when I was in middle school but I ran more long distance. In track meets I typically ran the the mile and the 800 meter. I really loved running especially when I had hard days I feel like I could let it out. Our taste in music is complete opposite. I love country music and that is all that I listen to. I listen to a little bit of rap and out of the few artists that you named J. Cole is not bad and I sometimes listen to some of his music. Good luck this semester and in life after graduation!

  11. Hey James! Congratulations on almost being done with school AND having an idea on where you’re going. I too, watch a lot of sports…sometimes too much sports. I recently started watching more of the NFL but I admittedly don’t know much about the underpinnings of the sport and I don’t really have a team that I’ve committed to. Thanks for sharing and best of luck entering your career!

  12. Hey James!

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! There seem to be a lot of us seniors enrolled in this class. I'm super jealous that you've already got a plan and job waiting for you when you graduate. I have no idea what I'll be doing. Being a bartender sounds like fun! I too play Overwatch but unfortunately I play on Playstation. Maybe one day they'll support cross-paltform play. Congratulations again!

  13. Hi James,

I loved getting to read some about you. I think it is awesome that you enjoy your job, I always thought bartending would be a fun job once I turn 21. Since I am also from the DFW area, I have grown up with the Cowboys but lost interest over the years. Good for you for staying a fan through all of the years. Good luck with the rest of college, congrats on almost being done!

  14. Hey James!
Congrats on graduating! That is super awesome. I have been to Red Rock before, and it was awesome! I want to become a bartender at my restaurant, PennyHill, but I am super ignorant about alcohol. I love your taste in rappers, and in food! How cool, haha. I look forward to reading more of your stories and getting to know more about you for the second half of the semester.
    Best wishes,
    Mikayla

  15. Hey James!

I am also a big fan of football and am a Kansas City Chiefs fan myself, as I am from Kansas City. I enjoy playing video games as well, but have never played Overwatch. Maybe I should give it a try! I think it is very cool that you have already found a job once you are done with school, and Siemens is a very reputable company and I'm sure it will be a great place to start your career!

  16. Hi James!

I enjoy watching sports as well. I haven't stayed as in tune as normal this year as I took the no cable route. ESPN and twitter keep me pretty well updated, but it just isn't the same. I think watching sports live is far better than on TV anyway, so I'm actually not missing too much. How awesome that you already have a job lined up, I'm sure that takes a lot of pressure off your shoulders in regard to gradation. I also graduate this semester, but will be headed to law school. Keep pushing... we are almost there!
