Feedback Thoughts

In "A fixed mindset could be holding you back - here's how to change it," Anna Kelsey-Sugg informs us that the participation trophy culture is not working and doesn't prepare people for the real world. When people are told that they are great at everything while they are growing up and people only give them positive reinforcement, they become defensive of any criticism later in life, blaming other for their faults or becoming depressed.

In the same article, it is discussed that in a work place, having a growth mindset will set you up for future success as well as a company that has this culture and mindset also. This means recognizing the work that you used to gain previous knowledge and skills and not being afraid to go forward to learn new knowledge and skills. You must be open to criticism and failures in order to grow and reach new heights in all aspects of life. This is part of learning and success.

"A simple 5-second habit to rewire your harshly self-critical brain" deals with goals and setbacks. Whenever you have a goal that you are working towards, it is inevitable that you will run into several setbacks. This is a part of the process but setbacks can often be viewed as total failures and can lead people to quitting the journey that they are on towards their goal. To overcome this you must realize that you can keep moving forward and should congratulate yourself once you are back on track. You had a problem but have now overcome it and that should be considered a success. The article calls the REBS or reality-based self-congratulation. You are shutting out your overly critical self and working towards success.

On the surface, these article seem to contradict each other but I believe that they work hand in hand. While criticism is necessary and not being great at everything is a reality, that does not mean that we can't congratulate ourselves when we overcome a bump in the road. By practicing both of these tools you can become more successful in your endeavors.
